Scott County Lumber, Inc. has deep roots in the history of our local community. In 1892, Foster Lumber Company was opened in Scott City, Kansas at 111 W. 4th Street.
In 1977 a new facility was built at 1510 South Main Street. That address became the new location of Foster Lumber Company. By 1979, Foster Lumber Company was purchased by Diamond International Corp. In 1983, the lumber yard was purchased by three private individuals from Boulder, Colorado (three former Foster Lumber Company executives). They chose Scott County Lumber for the name of their business. In 1997, long time manager, Gerald Koehn purchased Scott County Lumber. In late 2010, Gerald aquired the building located directly to south of the Scott County Lumber office. By joining the two buildings together, Scott County Lumber greatly expanded its hardware department and added display space for kitchen cabinets, flooring, decking, and many other home improvement products. In February 2024, Scott County Lumber entered a new chapter when it was purchased by Unruh LLC, owned by Andrew and Alice Unruh. Building on decades of experience in agriculture, construction, refrigeration, trucking, and small business, the Unruh's are committed to preserving the company's strong reputation while continuing to invest in its future. Their vision is to strengthen relationships with contractors, farmers, homeowners, and do-it-yourself customers by expanding product offerings, improving customer service, embracing new technology, and remaining a trusted source for quality building materials, hardware, tools, and expert advice. From its beginnings as Foster Lumber Company in 1892 to its current locally owned operation, Scott County Lumber has remained dedicated to helping build the homes, farms, businesses, and communitites of western Kansas. More than a century later, while ownership has changed through the generations, the company's commitment to integrity, service, and investing in the people and future of our community continues to be the foundation on which Scott County Lumber stands today. |
